The Newport Transporter Bridge.
We lived in Newport for 6 months and travelled across the river Usk on it in the car. It cost only 50p. One can walk across the walkway at the top, as it is opened to the public on specific public holidays such as New year I think it was. One can get a really good view of Newport and its surrounds, but we never did walk across the top.The Usk river winds and meanders through the city of Newport, very much like the Thames does in London. While it is not a big city, if you are new to the area, getting your bearings whilst travelling around it can be difficult. As one tends to take your bearings from the water and it meanders quite a lot, we were continually taking wrong turns
. It is the "longest surviving" Transporter Bridge in the world . It is currently closed for an upgrade, unless my info is out of date.
The Usk river flows down from the Brecon Beacons through the Vale of Usk into Newport city and empties in the Severn estuary and then ultimately into the Bristol channel. This thread is really about the Transporter Bridge, but the river Usk is too interesting not to mention. Unfortunately these pictures of the Transporter Bridge are the only ones that survived our computer crash of the time, I had many of the Usk, the Bristol Channel and the village of Usk ( which is a most pituresque little place) etc but lost them all
So I have included some links with photos of these places I mention.
Another interesting thing to note is the medieval trading ship dating back to 1465 that was "dug up" in 2002 on the west bank of the river Usk. It has been excavated and restored, I am not sure if it is already completed.
The Usk is also noted for its Salmon and Trout fishing, but the six months we spent there, were winter months, and as I was getting my self ready to do a whole lot of fly fishing
, we were relocated to the other side of the country, literally.
The entire river has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Here are a few links to some photos and text on the area as I only have these of the transporter bridge

They are extremely interesting. The bridge is a masterpiece of engineering. What a picturesque & scenic place the Usk Valley is.
It would be so very easy to take some wonderful images of its lovely scenery.
